RF Limiting amplifiers are different than other amplifiers because of their ability to maintain a constant output as it is driven into saturation/compression.
The most important performance requirement of a limiting amplifier is to minimize output power variations and provide a constant output over a wide input dynamic range which benefits in protecting subsequent components from input overdrive.
RF Limiting amplifiers are good for maintaining constant envelopes, but will not provide a linear output. Because the output of limiting amplifiers will be into saturation/compression, some distortion will occur.
Broadband, high dynamic range limiting amplifiers are critical components in oscillator driver networks and in electronic warfare (EW) systems where stable compressed output power is required over a wide input power range.
Fairview’s limiting amplifiers are used to protect sensitive microwave receivers by limiting excessive input power which could potentially create unwanted distortion or even damage the receiver. These amplifiers cover broadband frequencies between 1 to 18 GHz. Our new limiting amplifiers are designed inside hermetically-sealed packages to withstand harsh environments. This portfolio of limiting amplifiers can accept a range of input power levels from -61 dBm to +20 dBm depending on the model. Output power ranges between 15 and 19 dBm with a saturated power output deviation of ±0.5 dB over the frequency range. High gain levels of 40 to 80 dB are typical while exhibiting excellent gain flatness performance of ±1 dB depending on the specific model.
Our limiting amplifiers are unconditionally stable and include built-in voltage regulation, bias sequencing, and reverse bias protection for added reliability. Over-voltage protection is installed externally for easy repair and the amplifiers are fully matched internally for 50 Ohm input and output. This feature mitigates a customer’s need for any additional sensitive external RF tuning components.
